Wedding Gifts: How About the Honeymoon?

August 26, 2011 by

Wedding gifts can be a tricky old business. Not for the buyer you understand – after all, with online wedding gift lists it’s dead easy for guests these days. No, what we mean is it’s actually tricky for the bride and groom-to-be. These two find themselves in a dilemma. Do they sign up with John Lewis, before going round the store zapping the barcode of everything in sight? They could do, of course, but let’s be honest, most engaged couples live together prior to marriage, so there’s every chance they already own a nice toaster. They’re not that fussed about a Le Creuset casserole dish. And they don’t quite have the nerve to ask for an SLR camera.

So what’s the alternative when it comes to a wedding present? The engaged couples in this office have a theory – get your guests to pay for your honeymoon. There are two ways to do this. The first is to set up an account with a travel company who deal with honeymoons. They give you your account details, which you then pass onto your guests. They’re then free to contribute as much or as little as they like, in addition to specifying what component of the holiday they want to contribute towards. For example, it may be you want to go on a few excursions while you’re away, in which case, they can pay for one of those. Likewise, they might put their contribution towards a relaxing massage for you both in the hotel’s spa. Failing that, they can just pay for a little chunk of your stay.

]]>

The flipside to all this is that you’re limited to travelling with the company in question. And in doing so it means you don’t have the chance to shop around for the best deal. That’s where option two of simply setting up a Honeymoon bank account has the upper hand. This way your guests can simply transfer their chosen sum, which you’re then free to use as you see fit. Whatever option you plump for, there is one stumbling block – do you book in advance and hope you get the required sum to pay for it all? Or do you wait until you know how much you’ve got, before getting a late deal?

This decision might depend on how confident you are of getting your required figure. After all, if you book in advance and the full sum doesn’t materialise, you’ll be the ones left to make up the shortfall. At the same time, booking ahead gives you peace of mind and something to look forward to, while leaving it to the last minute means things are up in the air until very late. That said, a last-minute booking does mean you’re purchasing within your means. Swings and roundabouts and all that.

One thing’s for sure – as unique wedding gifts go, the modern honeymoon is a popular option. It isn’t, however, a cheap option. Just the other day, for instance, I was having lunch with a couple who tied the knot last year. Now it has to be said this couple aren’t exactly hard up, but when I learnt that of their fortnight away, £4,000 was spent on a three-night safari, I nearly choked on my steak. Obviously there are far more affordable alternatives out there, but with most couple’s desire to distinguish their honeymoon from A. Nother relaxing holiday, there comes a premium.

So be prepared to compromise and remember to bear in mind the time of year you travel. Mexico and the Caribbean in August is their low season, so you’ll get great rates only tempered slightly by the chance of the odd downpour. Then again, anywhere in Europe at the same time of year is likely to be as expensive as it gets. Year round deals to places like Bali and Thailand always represent great value for money, while the Maldives, the Seychelles and the like have a range of prices to cater to most budgets. You see where we’re coming from. And hey, half the fun is doing the research!

GoneDigging don’t sell honeymoons. But we do have a few wedding gift alternatives for you to check out. We also sell loads of other personalised gifts, from children’s storybooks and original newspapers, to mugs and retro sweets.

Budget Honeymoon Ideas

So your wedding plans are just about finalized when you come to the sinking realization that you definitely do not have enough left in the coffers to book that dream honeymoon to Hawaii. Bummer! But don’t give up hope yet. While two weeks on a tropical island may not be in the realm of possibility, that does not mean that you can’t enjoy a little special time alone after your wedding. These ideas for budget honeymoons will help you to plan a post-wedding vacation that is both romantic and affordable.

Whether you overspent on all of the wedding details from the flowers (darn out-of-season tulips flown in from Holland!) to the bridesmaid gifts (did you really have to buy your bridesmaid gifts at Tiffany, or could you find the same silver bracelets for less somewhere else?) or had a tight budget from the start, it can be really easy to realize that you are short on cash for your honeymoon. Since it is the one part of the wedding which is relevant only to the bride and groom, it is the thing most likely to be sacrificed; after all, your guests have to be fed! But a honeymoon is not an extravagance or something which is expendable; it is the first chance that the bride and groom have to be alone together as husband and wife. You don’t have to do anything fancy, but do plan to spend at least a couple of days alone together before returning to the daily grind.

If you are the outdoorsy types, plan a camping honeymoon. Picture it: just the two of you, alone in the woods. Hiking, bird watching, making s’mores around the campfire, and snuggling up in a two person sleeping bag pretty romantic, right? Then add in no tv, no cell phones, no computers, just the newlyweds without any electronic interruptions, and you can see why camping could make a wonderful inexpensive honeymoon, as long as you are both into it.

This may sound like an odd idea for a honeymoon, but what about borrowing a friend’s house? If you have ever house-sat for anyone, you know that there is something about staying in a nice home that does not belong to you which really feels like a true vacation. Obviously, your friend would have to be willing to stay somewhere else for a few days to make this idea work. Maybe you have an aunt whose house has a beautiful pool or a friend who lives out in the country; these could be great honeymoon spots. Bring in plenty of good food and wine for romantic candlelit dinners, rent your favorite old movies, and well, do what honeymooners do. It would be a nice break before returning to reality after your wedding.

Couples who have a little bit of money to spend can think a bit further afield. You could have a budget-friendly honeymoon by spending a few nights at a cozy bed and breakfast. Or take a train ride to a nearby big city. You can find affordable rooms in decent hotels online, and even discount tickets to shows and events. Many cities also have lots of free activities to enjoy, like concerts in city parks, art museums (not all museums are free, but at least most galleries are), and even just people watching. With a little creativity, you will find that you can stretch your honeymoon dollars quite far.

Caneel Bay – The Perfect Honeymoon

Choosing your honeymoon location is something that the bride and groom can do together. It can be a lot of fun to plan your honeymoon. Whereas planning your wedding can certainly be stressful and time consuming, just to name a few adjectives (feel free to insert your own), planning the honeymoon can be fun and exciting. Not all grooms like to help with the wedding planning, but planning the honeymoon is something the couple can do together. Planning your getaway can be a stress reliever, the break from wedding planning that you need. There are many different places a couple can choose to go on honeymoon, but one of my favorite locations is Caneel Bay. Caneel Bay is a luxury resort located at St. John Bay in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is the place to go if you are looking for some nice relaxation in the sun, a true beach resort for the happy honeymooners.

Caneel Bay can be the perfect honeymoon choice as it may be everything you are looking for. This resort offers so much such as beautiful rooms, seven different beaches, numerous activities to participate in and tons of amenities to make any honeymoon or vacation scream luxury.

When you arrive on the island you can be picked up at the airport and you will be given a welcome bottle of island rum to start off your vacation. As mentioned previously there are many things to see and do while you are on your honeymoon. Of course as this is a beach resort many of the activities are directly related to the beach and the water. Some of these activities include an underwater slideshow, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, swimming, scuba diving and fishing.

Of course you can also just spend countless hours at the beach, sunbathing in the beautiful weather where you can enjoy the view of white sand and tranquil water. You can enjoy a good book, good company or have a drink or something to eat with the one you love. Of course you can discover your inner child while you are on vacation away from the big city and build a sand castle or two.

Still think there is not enough to do or enjoy, looking for some down time that does not necessarily have to be in the water or on the beach? Caneel bay can help you out there too. Just like any other vacation or honeymoon spot you can enjoy nice dinners, drinks at the bar, art and tennis lessons and of course access to relaxing massages.

If all this is sounding wonderful and your wedding is not far along in the planning, you might even consider getting married at Caneel Bay. This resort is not only the perfect place for a honeymoon or vacation, but it would also be a gorgeous wedding ceremony and reception site. Think about it. What girl has not thought about how wonderful it would be to get married on the beach, saying her vows with the sun and endless blue sky above her and her groom, not to mention all her family and friends? Getting married at Caneel Bay would be the best combination of nature, elegance and beauty that any bride can hope for.

Planning the Perfect Honeymoon Package

February 20, 2011 by

If you have ever planned and executed a successful wedding then you know how much time, energy and all around stress is involved. For those who have never had this experience it is one that you will never forget. With all the craziness of planning a wedding a lot of times the second most important part of getting married gets left by the wayside and that part is the honeymoon. Trying to plan a honeymoon at the last minute, while do-able, is not highly recommended. When it comes to planning the perfect honeymoon package there are several things the soon to be newlyweds need to keep in mind.

“Where are we going to go?” is the first question most couples think of when they start putting together their honeymoon package. And that only makes sense because choosing a destination is probably the most important part of any honeymoon. This is something the bride and groom need to discuss thoroughly because the ultimate location must be a place that appeals to both of them. If they have both always wanted to travel to the same places this makes choosing a destination much easier. Going scuba diving because that’s what the groom likes to do but the bride doesn’t like to swim is not a good idea. It has to be a destination where both parties can share their experiences as a couple.

Once a honeymoon destination is chosen the next step involves traveling there and finding a hotel or resort to stay at. One thing to keep in mind is knowing which travel options appeal most to the young couple. There are people who do get air or sea sick so knowing this can greatly help in making comfortable travel plans. It will also affect where they may be able to travel to, affecting which destinations they can choose from.

It goes without saying that the accommodations at the final destination should be the best that the couple can afford. They will be spending a good amount of their time secluded in their room during their honeymoon choose wisely to make sure they are comfortable. Although everyone can’t afford a pent-house suite with the right honeymoon package newlyweds can get a romantic suite with a fantastic view for a good price. The honeymoon accommodations should reflect the romance and intimacy just married couple desire.

The last part of planning the perfect honeymoon package depends on how much time the couple has to spend on their honeymoon. If both of them hold jobs then vacation time needs to be used. This can have an impact on how long the honeymoon will last depending on the amount of vacation time each of them receives from work. One last thing to think about is the return trip home. A honeymoon is an enjoyable and relaxing time for a newlywed couple, except for the trip back home, which can tire the couple out. Remember to allow at least a day at home to rest up after the trip home. This will make the return to normal everyday life a little easier.

A honeymoon is a special time in a marriage and by taking into account the likes and dislikes of the soon to be married couple planning the perfect honeymoon package is much easier to do.

Twister is a traditional game played with a spinner and a plastic mat marked with dyed circles. While Lust! Adult Game is based on challenges with loving and physical tasks.searching and looking for the best honeymoon cruises that you and your partner can go on after your wedding ceremony, always consider these three important factors:  value, adventure and variety.A cruise honeymoon trip can range from affordable and mid-range prices to very expensive luxury trips.  Be sure to survey the different offerings of various cruise ships.  You can consult travel agencies or online web sites that book these trips on your behalf.  Better yet, ask around with your network of friends.

Perhaps one or two of them have taken wonderful and cheap honeymoon cruises all inclusive services in the past, and know where to find the best honeymoon cruise deals.Of course, it is expected that these trips are more expensive than the usual honeymoon activities taken by newlyweds like a beach trip or a nearby destination.  Still, make an effort to search for the best prices.   Be sure also that the cheap honeymoon cruises you will avail of are all-inclusive deals, meaning that one payment takes care of matters like air fare, food and drinks, lodging, travel entry payments, and activities on and off the cruise.Adventure is ImportantYou are probably thinking of going into honeymoon cruises in order to experience something you have never encountered in your life.  So, when searching for the right cruise to take with your partner, find out just how much adventure you will have.  Compare and contrast the different activities that the cruise trip companies offer to you.  The important thing is that you really read the details and schedule so that you will be able to select the one that caters to the interests of not only yourself, but also that of your partner. An adventure-filled honeymoon cruise package will enable you and your partner to experience something memorable immediately after your wedding.  Take note also to not pick adventure packages that would take up so much of your time and that would stress you out.  Pick the ones with just the right number of adventure activities that you will enjoy.  Remember, the purpose of this trip is for you and your partner to relax after the stresses of your wedding planning.  While you will not have to pack many formal attire, you may want to pack at least a couple semi formal dresses and a sportcoat as often there is at least one “Captain’s dinner” on a cruise that is a little more formal.Variety is SweetIf you scan through the different honeymoon cruise packages offered by various travel agencies and companies, you will notice that they offer different types of activities.  If you and your partner are the types who just simply enjoy relaxation and solitude, then look for honeymoon cruise deals that will satisfy this—perhaps a trip where you can have spa services and massages everyday?  If you are a very athletic couple, then consider getting cruise deals with a lot of activities.

There are even cruises that offer sporting games right on their ships!Popular DestinationsHere are the most popular honeymoon cruise deals usually taken by newlyweds hungry for quality time, solitude, and unforgettable adventures: Caribbean cruises that begin Jamaica then hop into different regions; European city hopping like prominent places in Paris, Florence, and Rome; Mexican cruises; and unconventional destination trips to Portugal, Turkey, Greece, or even Russia. One of the wise quotes about life and love concerning a wedding trip is, “Variety is the spice of life.”  Having lots of options, from dinner venues to outdoor scenery, will only sharpen the memories you have of this unique time in your life.Where to Get Deals on Honeymoon CruisesOne of the better sites for any travel deals is PriceLine.com.  You can do searches for where you want to go and the price you are willing to pay, and someone will respond and provide you an offer.  You can then give them a ridiculous counter-offer, and they just might accept it.

Eco-Companies Partner To Provide Green Honeymoon And Service Trips For Couples

January 2, 2011 by

New Haven, CT – The Green Bride Guide launched a new partnership this week with Elevate Destinations to offer couples a wide range of eco-friendly and philanthropic honeymoon trips.

According to The Wedding Report, couples planning “Eco Weddings” are 20% more likely to have a destination wedding than the average bride and groom, and approximately 60% of honeymooners will travel to a foreign country.

“Many couples are not aware of the impact traditional tourism has on local communities and the environment,” said Kate L. Harrison, author of The Green Bride Guide and founder of the leading green wedding website www.greenbrideguide.com . “With most packaged trips, 80% of the revenue goes to airlines, hotels, and international companies, but through Elevate Destination we are able to offer couples amazing alternatives.”

The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) defines ecotourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” Elevate Destinations is a leading responsible travel company offering custom designed trips that provide couples with the opportunity to better understand the environmental, socio-cultural and economic needs of the countries they visit.

“Everything was taken care of, from someone meeting us at the airports, to outings which showcased the natural wonders of the Seychelles, to wonderful hotels. Throughout the trip, logistics and activities were arranged that made it apparent that our commitment to being green was being met,” said Tina and Kulbir Walha who went to the Seychelles on their green honeymoon.

When it comes to honeymoons, being a green does not mean giving up luxury or comfort. “One of the things we are trying to show on the Green Bride Guide site is that couples do not have to sacrifice style or comfort to be eco-friendly,” said Harrison.

“Our green honeymoons are romantic and luxurious,” said Dominique Callimanopilos, founder and president of Elevate Destinations. “We never compromise on aesthetics, amenities, service or security and every trip gives back to people and the planet.”

-Every trip is carbon offset, to neutralize the impact of travel on the earth

-5% of the net cost of every trip is donated to NGOs working on conservation and community development projects in the destination country

-Couples stay at eco-hotels and lodges that also give back to the community

In addition, couples can choose to add one or more days of community service to their adventures. Ambitious couples can plan full service trips, where they can teach English, volunteer at an orphanage, or assist with species preservation.

Billy and Kristin Byrnes, who traveled to Belize in December 2009, chose to do service with a conservation organization: “We wanted to have an eco-friendly honeymoon in which we could do some volunteer work. We tried unsuccessfully, on our own, to find destinations in the Caribbean that could accommodate our two priorities: eco-friendly and volunteer opportunities. Thank goodness we came across Elevate Destinations! They were able to fulfill both of our top priorities, in addition to planning a fabulous honeymoon for us.”

According to Callimanopulos, many couples who take service trips stay connected with the people and projects they work with and continue to support their efforts to make the world a better place long after the honeymoon is over.

The Green Bride Guide is offering every couple who books an eco-friendly honeymoon this year a free couple’s massage on their trip. Couples just need to mention the Green Bride Guide promotion when they book the trip.

About the Green Bride Guide

The Green Bride Guide, founded by Kate L. Harrison, is the most comprehensive and credible resource for engaged couples seeking eco-friendly wedding ideas, products and services. The site is a companion to Harrison’s book, The Green Bride Guide: How to Plan an Earth Friendly Wedding on Any Budget and offers pictures and stories from real green weddings, decor ideas, educational resources, approved green vendor directory, planning tools, and advice from industry experts. Choosing Your Honeymoon – Should It Be A Package Vacation?

August 16, 2010 by

For most people getting married, the wedding preparations take all of the time and energy, but the perfect honeymoon does deserve some time, so that it successfully starts the husband and wife’s life together.

There are many possibilities when it comes to destinations, and we shall look at a few of those options here, along with some other important questions to ask and find answers to as well.

For thousands of brides and grooms, the wedding preparations add a tremendous amount of stress to the occasion. Everyone wants their wedding to be perfect, which is understandable, but at the same time, you need to be realistic, especially when it comes to the finances of this venture. Many people put themselves into debt so that they can have that perfect wedding, not realizing that it may be very difficult for them to pay off these large bills once they are back to work after the wedding. Some kind of comprise is necessary between being extravagant, and realistic. Weddings can still be perfect even though the costs are low. It is all about expectations, and if you set the bar too high then these dreams may be shattered. But it is better that your dreams are shattered than your marriage, as many marriages fall apart because of financial issues.

So, for your honeymoon, choose a destination that you can afford to go to, and if it means staying in the same state or province, that is fine too. It is essential that on your honeymoon the bride and groom spend some time together, quality time, as this has probably been in short supply because of all the wedding preparations, but this doesn’t mean that you have to spend a fortune on your honeymoon.

Do some financial planning about what you can afford to spend on your honeymoon vacation, working out a maximum amount and then stick to it! Hopefully this honeymoon will be your only one, and this makes the temptation to do it right even harder! But do not go into debt over this if you can possibly avoid it – hopefully wherever your new partner is, you can have fun, and you can buy one another small thoughtful treats rather than large expensive ones.

Now we have covered that, what honeymoon vacations and destinations are available? With so many beautiful places that you can consider, you need to decide on your budget, and decide a few basic things like a hot vacation, or a cold place. Decide the type of honeymoon vacation you would like. It doesn’t have to be hot and sunny with golden sand beaches. If you or your partner prefer snowy scenes, then go for that, but decide between you whether you want hot and sunny or cold and snowy, or whatever works for you.

Currently the top five honeymoon destinations are Venice, Paris, Tahiti, Rome, and of course Hawaii. Note that not all of these honeymoon destinations have sandy beaches – but places like Rome and Paris are still thought to be romantic cities to wander around. The advantage of places like Venice, Paris and Rome, is that there are plenty of attractions that you can visit if you choose to, and if not they are all interesting places to wander around.

If you are interested in Tahiti, this gives you the option of white sandy beaches, but also rugged mountains too, as well as plenty of marine life. There are plenty of islands to snorkel around, or go cruising to, so it can be very restful. There are bungalows that are built over the water, which can be very romantic.

Hawaii too has the sandy beaches, but it also has great night life, so if you want this contrast of romantic beaches during the day and then a busy nightlife, this may be for you. There are islands to visit, and a dormant volcano or a live one too, so the choice of Hawaii as a honeymoon vacation is one with which you can’t really go wrong.

Of course there are plenty of other cities that offer plenty to the tourist. Niagara Falls, in both Canada and the US is one place that looks entirely different in the middle of winter compared to summer. It depends a little on the time of year for your honeymoon, but more so on the type of vacation you want, whether it is relaxation on a white sand beach, or a week of skiing in the Alps.

Look out for package deals, but you need to have some kind of idea if the activities you want with the deal, otherwise you may end up paying a lot more for items you don’t want or need. The package deals can be a great way of knowing beforehand exactly what your expenses are since many offer restaurants on site that are included in your package. This can make it a fun way to try different foods too, as their cost is included, so if you don’t like something, you won’t go hungry.

No matter what you plan for your honeymoon, where you go, or what places you visit, remember that this is the time for you and your loved one to enjoy a little relaxation after the hustle and bustle of your wedding.
